How to Evaluate Competency-Based Training

In this tutorial, I will show you how to evaluate a lesson from a course using the Competency-Based Training and Assessment framework, this can be done in the Flights or Me Module.

Evaluating a lesson using CBTA follows a different logic from traditional flight lessons. First of all, the “Minimum Grade” changes to a “Standard Grade”, which means that students don’t need to achieve a minimum passing grade to pass a lesson, instead, they will be evaluated based on behavioral indicators for specific competencies, whether they are above or below the standard.

Also, if the student presents any deviation from the standard grade, the instructor will need to specify which behavioral indicator is above or below the standard.

NOTE: According to the  ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) guidelines for Evidence-Based Training, if a student is below standard in one competency but above standard in another competency in the same exercise, the instructor will have to choose the most relevant outcome of the exercise, since you can only choose to grade the exercise with remarks on the competencies either above or below the standard, but not both at the same time.

EVALUATE CBT LESSONS: (1:23)

Let me show you how to evaluate a CBT lesson:

1. First, log in to your account.

2. Go to the Flights Module.

3. Select the CBT flight you want to evaluate.

4. You can either click on the “Edit Flight” button, and go to the Lessons tab, or click on the “Evaluate flight” button which will lead you directly to the flight evaluation.

5. Here you can add the global evaluation which works like a traditional evaluation, just choose the grade for every concept and enter a global evaluation comment if necessary. Then you can evaluate the exercises in the lesson:

The standard grade is already automatically pre-selected for all exercises, which in this case is 3.

NOTE: You can set the standard grade for each exercise when creating a CBT lesson. To learn how to do it, please watch the tutorial How to Add/Edit/Delete Competency-Based Training Courses.

For example, I am going to grade a 2 in “Exit, speed control, stop”; since that grade is below the standard, the application will display the competencies applicable to this exercise, so I can mark at least one behavioral indicator in any of the Competencies tabs where the student didn’t achieve the required standard level. Now I am going to grade the “Use of throttle” exercise with a 5; since 5 is above the standard grade, I need to mark which indicators were above the required standard level.

6. You can also leave a comment on each exercise.

7. If you are ready to finish the evaluation, sign the sheet by entering your password.

8. And click on “Save”.

You can also access the flight evaluations in the Me Module, under the Signatures tab. For more information, please watch the tutorial, Signatures.

ROLES AND PRIVILEGES: (3:21)

Please note that depending on the configuration of Roles and Privileges, users may or may not have access to perform flight evaluations.

To set up the Roles and Privileges for the Flight Module:

1. Go to the Users Module.

2. Click on the Roles icon on the top right-hand corner of the page.

3. Select a role from the drop-down list.

4. Click on the Flights tab.

5. Here you can choose which privileges to give to each role. To manage flight evaluations, the user role will need at least the privilege to view the Flights Module and evaluate lessons.
