Over the past year the global air travel industry has nearly returned to its pre-pandemic levels, marking a significant milestone in its recovery process. As such, the demand for aviation training and related services has shown signs of a faster recovery. However, the industry still faces lingering challenges in meeting this demand, particularly in terms of training capacity and the time required to bring new personnel online while prioritizing safety.
Boeing’s 2024 Pilot and Technician Outlook (PTO) projects a continued significant demand for aviation personnel over the next 20 years as the global commercial airplane fleet continues to expand. According to the latest PTO, the industry will require nearly 2.4 million new professionals to support the growing commercial fleet and meet the long-term increase in air travel. Specifically, commercial carriers will need 674,000 new pilots, 716,000 new maintenance technicians, and 980,000 new cabin crew members through 2043.
Chris Broom, vice president of Commercial Training Solutions at Boeing Global Services, noted, “Driven by aviation traffic trending above pre-pandemic levels, personnel attrition, and commercial fleet growth, the demand for aviation personnel continues to rise.”
Regional Demand Highlights
Eurasia, China, and North America will account for more than half of the demand for aviation personnel through 2043.
South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Africa are the fastest-growing regions for personnel, with staffing demand expected to more than triple over the next 20 years.
The PTO forecast includes these projections for industry needs through 2043:

The Growing Need for Flight Schools
As the aviation industry prepares for this surge in demand, the need for flight schools and training programs will increase significantly. Aspiring pilots and technicians will seek comprehensive training to meet the stringent requirements of the industry. This demand will spur growth in flight schools, creating numerous opportunities for institutions to expand their offerings and for new schools to enter the market. Ensuring an adequate supply of well-trained personnel will be crucial to sustaining the health, safety, and prosperity of the global aviation ecosystem in the coming decades.
The aviation industry's future relies on robust training infrastructures and innovative training solutions to produce the next generation of aviation professionals. Investing in these areas will not only address the immediate personnel shortages but also ensure the long-term growth and safety of global air travel.
